U joint failed on the highway, now what?
Had a bit of a scare last Thursday when I heard a loud bang and felt the whole car shudder while doing about 100 on the E11. Pulled over and found the rear U joint had basically given up, and the driveshaft was hanging there looking sorry for itself. Got it towed home and it's been sitting since because I'm honestly nervous about who to hand it to. The first place I called wanted to just swap in a used shaft from a scrap yard which I'm not comfortable with. Someone in a Jeep group told me to look for the best driveshaft specialist for Jeep vehicles because balancing and phasing matter and a random garage will just bolt it back up wrong. That made sense to me, but how do I actually confirm a shop has the balancing equipment instead of just claiming it? Do they usually rebuild the existing shaft or insist on a new one, and what sort of price range should I expect?
